A NEW SERIES OF ART WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS  AT THE CHARTERHOUSE

The Charterhouse, the historic site and museum in Charterhouse Square EC1, is continuing to build its diverse and exciting programme of workshops for families, schools and adults. New this summer is a series of art workshops for adults.  Each is run by an artist and experienced tutor, and take the Charterhouse estate, which dates back to 1348, as their starting point for each of the classes.  Catering for all levels, these workshops are a wonderful opportunity to both hone your art skills, and to be inspired by the extraordinary surroundings and history of the Charterhouse, which has been living the nation’s history since 1348.

Charterhouse Summer Workshops

Contemplating Colour and Collage

Thursday 21 June, 10.00am – 3.00pm

£50.00

The Charterhouse welcomes you to follow in the footsteps of Patrick Rowe (1917-2013) a professional artist who became a Brother of Charterhouse in 2002. Discover his colourful paper collages before creating your own art work in this hands-on workshop.

This day long workshop will start with an accompanied tour of the Charterhouse and summer blossoming gardens. Participants will be encouraged to visually forage for personal artefacts and findings that stir their imagination. Following this, there will be a practical period to loosely sketch, play with colour and light, before producing a striking collage. The workshop will make introduce and make of both traditional and experimental collage methods.

Your tutor, Alex Roberts, is a British artist and collaborative researcher who curates and educates. Alex lives and works between Berlin and the UK and has a breadth of experience delivering creative workshops to people of all ages and abilities.

All art materials provided. Please bring an apron and sketching stool if desired.

Drawing for beginners: A sense of place

Take part in this beginners’ drawing workshop exploring the Charterhouse buildings through use of pencil and charcoal. Seek out hidden places of interest across our secluded 7.5 acres to create a series of lively sketches and drawings.

If you have always wanted to try your hand at drawing, this is the perfect workshop for you. Join us at this beginners’ level workshop as we take inspiration from the remarkable Charterhouse buildings. Complete a series of drawing challenges and develop your confidence with pencil and charcoal as the day progresses. Come away with increased ability and confidence whilst enjoying a playful day working around our inspiring site. Please prepare for the weather as this workshop involves working outside.

Your tutor, Lucy Brennan Shiel is an artist working with drawing, painting, film, printmaking, fabric and sewing. Based in Hastings, Lucy is an experienced and passionate teacher working with adults and children.

In and Around the Charterhouse

Monday 20 August, 10.00am-3.00pm

Explore the Charterhouse and Smithfield in a sketchbook day. Delight in our tranquil gardens before venturing to nearby Smithfield market to sketch streets and Victorian buildings. Working in pen, wash and pencil come and explore this hidden part of London.

The day long workshop offers participants a chance to explore this fascinating area of London. Start in the private Charterhouse gardens before moving into Charterhouse square with its perfect view of the main entrance and fine trees. Then, enjoy a walk through the square into Smithfield to tackle the streets and buildings of the Victorian meat market before returning to the Charterhouse for a final drawing inside our majestic buildings. Work to capture the essence of our unique location in a series of many sketches. Please prepare for the weather as this workshop involves working outside.

Your tutor, James Willis, is well known for his stunning paintings of London most recently exhibited his work from ‘The London Paintings’ at the OXO Gallery in London. Based in Hertfordshire, James, as is an experienced lecturer and teacher.

Please bring a sketch book (minimum size A4) and drawing pens, plus sketching stool if desired.

  • The Charterhouse is a former Carthusian monastery in London, located between Barbican and Smithfield Market, and to the north of what is now Charterhouse Square. Since the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century the site has served as a private mansion, a boys’ school and an almshouse, which it remains to this day.
